Paul Bavelaar, LL.B., LL.M., LL.M (Kiel), Ph.D., has read law at the University of Amsterdam. In 1993, he obtained his doctorate magna cum laude at the Christian-Albrecht-University in Kiel, Germany. In his doctoral thesis, Paul focused on parent company liability for debts of subsidiaries and directors’ liability.
Past experience:
Paul was admitted to the Dutch bar in 1993. From 1993 to 2000 he worked as an attorney-at-law with Stibbe law firm. On 1 January 2000, he was admitted as partner to KPMG law firm in Amsterdam, where he managed the firm’s German desk. In 2002 he moved to law firm Van Mens & Wisselink (now: VMW Taxand N.V.) where he worked as a partner until March 2012. At Van Mens & Wisselink he was in charge of managing the firm’s German desk and for a period of almost two years led the firm as Managing Partner.
Current practice:
In March 2012 Paul set up his own law firm, Bavelaar Attorneys. Paul advises Dutch and foreign clients on a variety of subjects within the fields of company law, corporate law and real estate law. Since 1993, he has assisted clients in numerous company takeover transactions, mergers, restructurings and real estate transactions. As a result, he has also been involved in many negotiations, frequently involving the drafting and/ or review of contracts. Therefore, Paul has gained a profound knowledge of the law and a keen sense of business, which enables him able to understand his clients’ needs. Furthermore, Paul has represented a significant number of German real estate funds with investments in Dutch real estate.
Side-activities:
Paul is a member of the German-Dutch Lawyers Association, a participant in the German-Dutch Lawyers Conference and a member of the International Bar Association (IBA). He is a frequent writer and speaker on various legal subjects and is a lecturer at the Amsterdam School of Real Estate, (part of the University of Amsterdam).
