On 1 July, a new, simplified procedure for changing names came into effect in Belgium. This reform is intended to make the process more accessible and efficient for citizens who wish to change their name, for a variety of reasons such as personal preference, gender identity or family circumstances. The changes mark an important step in the modernisation of Belgian naming legislation.
Previously, the process of changing a name in Belgium was complex and time-consuming, with many administrative hurdles. It often required an extensive legal procedure, with an application having to be submitted to the Ministry of Justice.
This could take months, if not years, and involved considerable costs. The new legislation aims to reduce this bureaucratic burden and make it quicker and easier for citizens to change their name.
