At IR Global, we believe we have a commitment to human rights and environmental justice. This year, we continue to champion the critical work of the Maparajuba Legal Collective by donating a percentage of every event ticket sold to support their tireless efforts in the Tapajós region of Pará, Brazil.
A movement for justice and sustainability
The Maparajuba Legal Collective has been a powerful advocate for the rights of traditional communities in the Amazon since 2022. Their work encompasses much more than legal assistance – they actively fight for indigenous land rights, challenge the expansion of agribusiness and soy transport infrastructure, combat illegal deforestation, and empower local associations to protect their cultural and environmental heritage.
In partnership with the Conselho Indígena do Planalto, the Sinchi Foundation, and Treesistance, Maparajuba supports the Munduruku and Apiaká peoples on the Santarém Plateau. Their mission is clear: to ensure the survival of the Amazon, safeguard indigenous cultures, and address pressing environmental threats.
2024 milestones
Maparajuba’s efforts this year have yielded tangible results, including:
- Progress in Land Demarcation: A significant milestone was achieved with the publication of a declaratory ordinance for the Terra Indígena Cobra Grande, advancing indigenous land rights.
- Environmental Accountability: Legal actions led to the conviction of individuals responsible for deforestation and the filing of critical lawsuits to protect sacred indigenous lands.
- Youth Leadership and Empowerment: Indigenous leaders, including Munduruku and Apiaká youth, were trained to use drones for territorial monitoring, a crucial tool in combating deforestation.
- Advocacy at National and Global Levels: From Brasília to COP30 in Belém, Maparajuba has amplified the voices of traditional peoples in discussions on climate action, land rights, and environmental protection.
- Fire Prevention Training: Establishing and training fire brigades has equipped communities to combat the increasing threat of forest fires, a growing challenge in the Tapajós region.
Looking Ahead
The future of Maparajuba is filled with ambitious goals, including continued advocacy for land demarcation, expanded training for youth and community leaders, and research on climate adaptation strategies tied to the Tapajós water crisis. They also plan to produce resources like a climate crisis handbook and strengthen regional collaborations to combat threats such as the Ferrogrão railway project.
IR Global is proud to stand with Maparajuba Legal Collective in this critical work.
