Diversity Wins

Diversity and inclusivity wins.

Studies show when companies implement their inclusivity & diversity (I&D) workplace practices, they improve their financial performance compared with their industry peers by an average 6.5 %.

91% of Fortune 500 companies include sexual orientation in their non-discrimination policies, and 83% include gender identity as well.

The same principles apply to sport.

Sports that tap into the growing sense of solidarity, by reaffirming their commitment to I&D and reaching out to local communities, will grow and innovate.

The GAA is supporting the establishment of the first LGBTQI+ Club in Ireland.

The club will cater for all players from all backgrounds. It will be established like any other club with sound governance structures and procedures. It will promote openness, equality and belonging. Playing numbers and member value will grow.

It’s easy to be deterred by high profile stories like Caster Semenya’s 10-year journey through the courts or World Rugby’s recent ban of trans female participation. These examples portray difficulties with diversity in elite sport.

But the overall message and evidence is clear – Diversity and inclusivity will better your community and better your organisation.

The GAA is about to register its first gay club. The association has increasingly been to the fore in promoting LGBTQI rights and supports in recent years and had its first official delegation take part in Dublin’s Pride Parade last year.
