N.D. Alfonso & Co. is a full-service law firm with over thirty (30) years’ experience in contentious and non-contentious maritime and commercial matters. The firm is primarily based in Trinidad and Tobago with satellite operations in Guyana offering a comprehensive range of legal services to our local, regional and international clientele.
Our firm has extensive experience in admiralty / maritime law in the areas of the judicial arrest and sale of vessels, maritime claims including breach of contract/ charterparty, collisions, cargo, insurance, tug and tow, salvage, piracy and arbitration. Our non-contentious maritime portfolio includes the drafting of contracts and charterparties, contracts of affreightment, bills of lading, ship sales and purchases as well as port management and operations. The firm has also represented and rendered advice to the Damen Shipyards Group, foreign ship owners/operators, including in the oil and gas sector, international insurance underwriters, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, including the Maritime Services Division and Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard, as well as the Shipping Association of Trinidad and Tobago.
We have also worked on behalf of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) since 1993 in collaboration with its local affiliate union in Trinidad and Tobago, Seamen & Waterfront Workers’ Trade Union (SWWTU) and have been instrumental in crew claims, repatriation (including immigration issues) and the recovery of wages of hundreds of foreign and regional seafarers. Our firm has served the interests of particularly at-risk seafarers who have been abandoned by shipowners or other interests or subjected to detention by State authorities.
In the area of commercial and corporate law, our firm has extensive experience in commercial negotiations, commercial, corporate and contract law, insurance law, labour and industrial law, wrongful dismissal, severance and redundancy issues, employment contract negotiations, personal injuries claims and assessment of damages.
Our Public Law portfolio includes constitutional law claims and judicial review where issues of breaches of fundamental rights, non-discrimination and equality form our core values and are reflected in the manner we approach these claims. Our consultants also provide legal services in the areas of criminal and immigration law to local and foreign nationals.

Show more +Ms. Nyree Alfonso is a specialist maritime and commercial Attorney-at-Law who has been in private practice for over thirty (30) years. She practices across much of the Caribbean Region and is admitted to practice law in the jurisdictions of Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Anguilla, British Virgin Islands and Montserrat).
She has a strong reputation in litigation and consultancy having commenced her legal career in 1990, with specialized practice in admiralty / maritime law in 1993. Ms. Alfonso holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of the West Indies (1987), a Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School (1989), a Master of Laws Degree in Commercial and Corporate Law from King’s College, University of London (1990) and a Post Graduate Diploma in Maritime Law with merit from London Metropolitan University (2009). She has also been awarded the designation of Accredited Director by the ICSA Chartered Secretaries of Canada.
Ms. Alfonso’s extensive corporate and insurance experience extends to her service as a Director in both public and private sector companies including serving as Chairman of the First Citizens Bank Group.
Ms. Alfonso has provided representation in complex litigation matters in the areas of admiralty / maritime law, corporate law, commercial law, family law and public law and throughout her career has worked alongside a team of corresponding Counsel, which includes Senior and Senior Junior Counsel of considerable experience and repute.
She has also volunteered her legal services to a number of communities in central Trinidad with a particular focus on implementing various security measures to deter criminal elements. Additionally, Ms. Alfonso, together with the Shipping Association of Trinidad and Tobago and the Seamen & Waterfront Workers’ Trade Union, have collaborated to assist at risk seafarers and other shore workers on a pro bono basis.
Ms. Alfonso has served as a Rotarian for several years and was a founding member of the Rotary Club of Maraval. Through the Club, she was integrally involved in educational development in rural communities in north Trinidad.
